What is a Good Kindergarten?

In a recent article entitled “Kindergarten Then and Now,” I lamented what appears to me to have become a national obsession with parents today—namely, having their children already achieve before beginning kindergarten the skills we traditionally want them to develop during kindergarten. Also in that article I deplored pressure from parents and society for children to acquire academic skills to the exclusion of social and emotional development. I specified things that should not characterize a kindergarten curriculum, things that would largely convert it to a pushed-down first grade. While identifying pitfalls can be helpful, it isn’t enough; it doesn’t say anything about what should be found in a high-quality kindergarten curriculum. That is what I want to deal with in this article.

In order for the kindergarten year to provide a supportive environment for your children, it should feature the following 10 attributes. I’m going to put a place for a check mark in front of each so you can print this up and fill it out when you select a kindergarten. If your children are already enrolled, evaluate the one they are attending by noting how many of the following features you observe in it.

_____1. A secure environment that meets children’s needs for health and safety. In today’s world of unexpected and seemingly random tragedy, this might be difficult to evaluate. Even so, check for things like fenced playgrounds, soft material under climbing equipment, etc. Make certain that high standards of hygiene (clean materials, hand-washing of children and adults, immunization requirements) are maintained.

_____2. A place with a lot going on where, at most times, not all the children are doing the same thing.If you walk into a totally quiet classroom (except at rest or nap time), one without a lot of noise from happy children, this is not a program geared to the developmental level of 5-year-olds.

_____3. A daily program featuring a balance between teacher-initiated and child-initiated activities.Many parents worry that kindergarten children are simply “allowed to do what they want to do” instead of what the teacher tells them to do. Children have a way of choosing to do things that they consider a challenge and also things they do very well. When given some choice, they may well be immersing themselves in an activity requiring a skill they want to master, or they might be “rehearsing” a recently acquired skill. Or they might be just having fun! Don’t knock it!

_____4. A place where you will see children working on early literacy and math activities. This does not mean just sitting at the table doing work sheets. It also means listening to stories, telling stories, dictating stories, looking at books independently, singing, relating events that happened outside school, and talking, talking, talking. It also means using computers interactively with appropriate games and tasks, solving puzzles, counting napkins put on the table to match the number of children, measuring heights and weights.

_____5. A place where, to the untrained eye, the children seem to spend a lot of time “just playing.”Play is the major vehicle through which children learn both social and academic skills. Don’t think that “just playing” means “not learning.”

_____6. A place that puts as much emphasis on social and emotional development as on academic achievement. Children typically come to kindergarten immature emotionally and more than a little self-centered. We want a curriculum that helps them feel good about themselves but that also helps them become aware that other children also have needs and rights. In a good kindergarten environment they will learn to wait, to share, to take turns, to help one another as they gain confidence in their own abilities and self-worth.

_____7. A place where children interact with and learn from each other as well as from adults. A kindergarten classroom with one teacher, 20 children, and no aide actually has 20 assistant teachers—the children. Children love to introduce new children to a given routine and explain how things should be done. “No, you can’t come in the housekeeping corner now because there can be only four of us at once.” (Note how the social rule also carries a math lesson.) “You’ve had the bike a long time and it’s my turn now.” Beware of a teacher who thinks she is the only one in the classroom from whom the children will learn.

_____8. A place with sufficient learning materials and equipment for the size of the group.Kindergarten children learn to share and take turns, but scarce toys and teaching materials paradoxically make this harder. There doesn’t have to be one easel for every child, but there should be enough so that no child has to wait beyond reasonable limits for a turn. Likewise for all other attractive items in the classroom and on the playground.

_____9. A place that values each and every child, allowing individual differences to manifest themselves. In most cities, age is the only criterion that determines whether a child may enroll in kindergarten. But, in any group of 5-year-olds, there will be children who function more like 4-year-olds and others who are like 6-year-olds. And overall development isn’t the only type of difference that will exist. Some children are veritable diplomats, and others get along poorly with their classmates. Some are daredevils, while others are timid and fearful. Such variability will be found in every area of development that can be identified. If all the children are forced into the same mold—one which corresponds to be preconceptions of the teachers and program planners—the children will not have a good experience during their kindergarten year (or any other school year for that matter). This is not to suggest that it is bad to try to have all the children achieve certain goals. It is merely a reminder not to expect that all children will achieve them at the same rate and time.

_____10. A place with a well-trained teacher in charge. Actually I could have listed this as the first characteristic, for, if a given program gets credit on this item, the chances are it will receive credit on most of the others. With the new recognition of the importance of the early years of life, training for kindergarten teachers has steadily become more rigorous over the past few decades. Teachers in public schools must be certified—which means they have been trained reasonably well—but this is not always the case in private or church-run programs. So be sure to check on this when you check out your child’s school.

Final Thoughts

If you have the opportunity to visit different programs and choose a kindergarten for your child, look for a “perfect 10” on this little rating form. If your child will attend public school and you have no choice of school or teacher, be an advocate for improving quality along the lines I have sketched here. The beneficiaries of your efforts will be our children—and our nation.

Why adaptation period is important to preschool kids

Preschoolersare not great at multitasking. They are incredibly smart, have amazingimaginations and are curious beyond belief, but when it comes to doing a fewmajor things at once, it can be overwhelming. Adjusting to preschool is tops onthe list of "things that can cause a child stress." And even if yourlittle one loved preschool from the very first day, he can'twait to get out of the car and into the classroom, it is likely that you maysee some regression in other parts of his life.

Generally,as a child learns a new skill or task, other areas will suffer. So while he'sat school, getting used to the routine there, making new friends, learningabout shapes andcolors and maybe even how to write letters, there is a lot going on in hisbrain. There is lots to remember and take in. It's fun, but it is stilldifferent and stressful. Home is safe. It's a constant. It's natural to expectan occasional extra temper tantrum andmoodiness.

Youcan help by being supportive. Lots of hugs and encouraging words. Talking isgood too. Ask your child to name his favorite things about preschool. Who arehis friends? What does he play outside or at free time? Praise him for doingsuch a great job at school as well as when he does "big boy" things at home --maybe he remembered to hang up his coat or put away his toys withoutbeing asked. Drawing attention to the good things is a great way to encouragethat type of behavior.

The timing is important too. If thisis occurring on occasion, say, only when he is tired or after school, chancesare this should all sort itself out within a few weeks. If he is acting likethis all the time, you may want to consult your the teacher or yourpediatrician. If you preschooler is young (under three-and-a-half) or this isthe first year of preschool, scaling back hours might help him relax as well.You can increase the time he spends in school slowly, monitoring his actionsand behavior as you go.

Preschool offers many benefits — it can be a great place for kids to interact with peers and learn valuable life lessons such as how to share, take turns, and follow rules. It also can prepare them for kindergarten and beyond.

But going to preschool does come with its fair share of emotions, for both the parent and the child. For a kid, entering a new preschool environment filled with unfamiliar teachers and kids can cause both anxiety and anticipation. Parents might have mixed emotions about whether their child is ready for preschool.

The more comfortable you are about your decision and the more familiar the setting can be made for your child, the fewer problems you — and your little one — will encounter.

Spend time talking with your child about preschool even before it starts. Before the first day, gradually introduce your child to activities that often take place in a classroom. A child accustomed to scribbling with paper and crayons at home, for example, will find it comforting to discover the same crayons and paper in his or her preschool classroom.

Visiting your child's first preschool classroom a few times before school starts can also ease the entrance into unfamiliar territory. This offers the opportunity to not only meet your child's teacher and ask about routines and common activities, but to then introduce some of those routines and activities at home. While you're in the classroom, let your child explore and observe the class and choose whether to interact with other kids. The idea is to familiarize your child with the classroom and to let him or her get comfortable.

While acknowledging this important step your child is taking and providing support, too much emphasis on the change could make any anxiety worse. Young kids can pick up on their parents' nonverbal cues. When parents feel guilty or worried about leaving their child at school, the kids will probably sense that.

The more calm and assured you are about your choice to send your child to preschool, the more confident your child will be.

If your child clings to you or refuses to participate in the class, don't get upset — this may only upset your child more. Suggestions for leaving kids at preschool are simple but can be hard on a parent. Always say a loving goodbye to your child, but once you do, you should leave promptly. Never sneak out. As tempting as it may be, leaving without saying goodbye may make kids feel abandoned, whereas a long farewell scene might only serve to reinforce a child's sense that preschool is a bad place.

A consistent and predictable farewell ritual can make leaving easier. Some parents wave from outside a certain classroom window or make a funny goodbye face, whereas others read a short book before parting. Transitional objects — a family picture, a special doll, or a favorite blanket — can also help comfort a child. Also, keep in mind that most kids do well once their parents leave.

Whether your child is eager or reluctant to go to preschool, make sure that a school staff member is ready to help with the transfer from your care to the classroom when you arrive in the morning. Some kids may jump right in with their classmates, whereas others might want a private cuddle and a story from a caregiver before joining the group.

Many preschools begin with a daily ritual, such as circle time (when teachers and children talk about what they did the day before and the activities that are ahead for the day). Preschoolers tend to respond to this kind of predictability, and following a routine will help ease the move from home to school.

Time busy on Concert practice

Ah Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuu....Is our time busy for the year end concert dance practice, start from Monday onward, almost everyday use 2 hours for dance practice cum flow rehearsal. but sad that few of the angels still absent with some of the reason. some of them went for Long Holiday and some of them been sick at home because of Weather . hopefully everything will smooth after this week. all come back with the practice otherwise will be mess during concert night.

Rabbit stolen by someone again

Woooooooooooo, Finally we are success to achieved our next challenging, using short time frame to build up a new branch which received the OC and house key from owner since 15 Oct 2011. Our Launching day been fixed on 12 Nov 2011 since September. we have no choice, need to rush whole renovation and must be on time to carry out our Launching day. some of the minor jobs, bai lao shi needs to work together with the renovator.
Glad and thank God, finally everything is on time, although still have minor matter still under construction. The event is successfully done in very well and thank you some of the existing parents and existing angels came for support. we have very good respond new registration on that day. here, bai lao shi would like to share some of event photos .

After a month busy on preparation of New QQ Kindergarten & Nursery Branch located at Taman Tuanku Haminah. finally bai lao shi have back to my lovely Main branch. long time never see my all little angels here, miss them so much.in other hand, after end of a part of the new branch preparation, still have lots of small matter or preparation need to settle. We are going to have our big event at 9th of Dec 2011 (Friday). right moment we are having peak rehearsal at school, bit worry about some of the angels will absence because of some reason. some of them been applied leave go to oversea Holidays, some of them (hopefully not) sick. hope all of the angels taking care of the healthy, because now the day the bad weather (sometime hot sometime will rain) is a root cause of sick.here, would like to inform all of the parents, following information will need your an attention.Concert and Graduation Rehearsal ;Date : 9th Dec 2011 (friday)Time : 8.30am till 12nnAttire : School Green uniformNote : Please send your kid directly to Park Avenue Hotel Lobby, Our teachers will standby there for receive your kid. Fire Drill Practicing

In order to let all the angels know how to run out from the Kindergarten follow by the Fire Road sign, we have carry out the Fire Drill Practice during beginning of the month. bai lao shi didn't let all the angels and teachers know when should bai lao shi blow the whistle. around 11am whistle sound been alert by all the angels, they are quickly ran out from the class room, but one of the class angels and teacher still caught at the class because didn't hear about the whistle sound. we are assume all of them became BBQ at this incident. btw, Bai lao shi asked some of the question regarding with these practices. almost 5 and 6 years old kids able to answer to the question.

Some of the parents they might have wrong mindset regarding children too early send to school is learn nothing, actually for our QQ school long drive testing especially for kid who only has 2 or 3 years old, they suppose to absorbed more knowledges from these ages. wrong perception of information will miss out the golden learning period. here we attached a movie clip for children whose only 3 years old what they so wonderful kids which able to sang many songs. just enjoy yourself. Parents & Teachers are the first to point out how creative arts programs have strongly influenced their students' self-image and increased their academic success in the areas of math, science and the language arts. But sadly, during these difficult economic times, arts programs are the first to be sacrificed. In addition, in many schools where classroom space is limited, art "studios" are now only contained in a cart that is wheeled by teachers from room to room, severely limiting the arts education students receive.

QQ School is strongly recommended all the little angels to create own design hand craft, although some of them are small but they have own idea to colour it. following are all the little angels art projects. pretty right? so, children suppose to explore the art.

One again, QQ is foreseen an importance of CPR, we have sent our teachers to the CPR and first aid training during June 2011. gain the knowledges rather than don't know. Human life is really importance to us, although we are only as a teacher, and we know....once parent sending kid to us, we have responsible to taking care. thus, in order do not miss out anything happen in the sudden. QQ的成长故事

QQ的创立并不是一席爆红，快速致富的。QQ的创立是每个想要创办教育事业的人的成长故事，是一步一脚印，坚持着一贯的信念走下来的，这股信念就是~“让我们一起来教育【Together We Educate】”，我们的使命是要让每个有QQ教育园所的地方都发展成一个教育影响力中心，连同家长、社群一起来教育。

QQ的4位联合创办人都是在2004年就开始投入幼儿教育事业的服务，却在2007年机缘巧合下，凑在一起创立了QQ全方位教育事业。初创时只有区区的3间幼儿园与托儿中心，分别座落在吉打的双溪大年(白老师)与居林（董老师）及槟城（缪老师）。

2008年，在当时担任集团咨询顾问的翰通老师催化下，全数园所开始设立部落格【Blog】，通过网路平台加强与家长们的教育互动，初步落实虚拟教育影响力中心的使命。

2009年，在内部提拔园长，创造就业机会的大前提下，QQ在靠近居林的巴东色海加开一间分园，由原任居林分园主任的黄老师参与创立，成为新的园长。同年也随应网路发展趋势，全园开始在目前当红的社群媒体面子书上开设粉丝页【FansPage】，进一步深化了QQ与家长及社群们互动，一起发挥教育影响力的使命。

2011年是QQ的稳健成长年，首间对外扩展坐落在南马新山Nusajaya, Horizon Hills的分园将在10月1日正式投入服务，第一次把QQ社区教育影响力的理念带到了南马。紧接下来，在11月中，再次通过内部提拔的机制，北马将会有另两间分园投入服务当地社群。这两间分园分别坐落在槟城大山脚由缪老师与双溪大年的Tuanku Haminah花园由罗老师及吴老师管理。

这7年一路走来，我们始终对QQ所提供的教育事业充满着热情，因为我们深信唯有优质的教育可以带来改变，而幼儿教育就像建筑100层大楼的地基，不能偷工减料。

Math is a subject of vital importance.Give your child a good foundation in math by teaching him the basics when he is young. Eventually, he will be able to perform geometry, trigonometry and even calculus as he moves through his school career.

Your child needs a good grasp of mathematical concepts for her future. Careers in the sciences, financial industry, medical professions and engineering require advanced math skills. Your child cannot perform advanced math skills until she has a good, basic foundation. Children without a proper math foundation may be unable to excel in their studies. If your child wants to be a veterinarian, but does not have the required math background, she may be unable to fulfill her dream.

Understanding Numbers

The identification of single digit numbers is a basic skill. Teach your preschooler to count from one to 10 by counting out loud with him. Help him understand that a group of objects represents a numeral, explains the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Once he begins to recognize numbers, give him three crackers and a set of flash cards. Ask him to find the card that corresponds to the number of crackers. Repeat with other numbers. Teach him to count by 10s and then to 100.

Basic Math

大多孩子，初上幼儿园时，会经历一段恼人的生病期，这段生病期，有长有短，甚至反复发生，因人而异。孩子生病，不光孩子受罪，家长也倍受煎熬。怎样应对这种情况,使孩子感染的机会降到最低限度呢？

幼儿园接收了四面八方和不同环境的孩子，每个孩子身上所带来的细菌各有不同，如果孩子的抵抗力稍微比其他的弱，难免受感染的机会比较高，其中一个原因也是孩子在小的时候较少与外界接触和缺少了部分的营养或敏感也是一个原因照成。

有些家长把幼儿园当作学校，好象孩子一天不去，就会给孩子造成很大的损失，在孩子生病还没有完全好，就把孩子又送去了。结果，适得其反，这样的孩子生病几率大多比一般孩子要多。我非常不赞同他们的做法，身体是本钱，生病的时候，一定该让孩子好好休息。看看是不是孩子有以下的问题而导致生病的原因？

1,不爱吃菜的挑食的孩子：这样的孩子，饮食结构不均衡，容易引起贫血和一些维生素或微量元素的缺乏，所以就会引起反复的感冒。

2，被加餐的孩子：一些家长，总担心孩子在幼儿园里吃不饱，傍晚回来后，不管孩子是否饿，就哄着孩子吃很多的饭，晚饭里有还有很多肉，这样的饮食很容易引起消化不良，造成孩子夜间睡眠质量差，久而久之，孩子就生病了。

3，睡前抱奶瓶的孩子，一些孩子，从小养成习惯，睡前要喝一瓶奶，喝完也不刷牙或漱口，殊不知，细菌最喜欢牛奶，最喜欢在隐蔽的咽喉部繁殖，于是，就容易诱发孩子反复呼吸道感染。

4，有过敏体质的孩子，这种孩子，小时候爱出湿疹，大多有家族史，比如爸爸妈妈有过敏性鼻炎或哮喘等，这样的孩子，发生上呼吸道感染的机会非常多，这样的孩子，咳嗽的原因不一定是感染，有可能是碰见了引起过敏的衣物，或吃了虾或螃蟹或其他引起过敏的食物引起的反复咳嗽。

5,睡眠太少的孩子；睡眠充足是孩子发育的先决条件，一些孩子，非常贪玩，不爱睡觉，加上家长爱熬夜，对孩子关心不够，没有培养孩子早睡早起的习惯，孩子每次都是玩的很累了才睡觉，第二天还要按时去幼儿园，久而久之，孩子疲乏过度，就生病了。

所以，作为家长，要让孩子少生病，茁壮的成长的确不是一件很容易的事情，我们不但要细心，要耐心，要精心，还应该学会适当的变通.

一向来，QQ的运动会大多数以趣味活动为主，年龄越大，趣味游戏的难度越高，所以家长们都可以在照片中观察。小天使们都尽力而为，大家都为自己争取个人賽的第一面奖牌。除了个人賽，还有就是为班级賽的环节，看小天使们的team work是否一致。有的小瓜在知道班级赛落选后，开始哭泣！哈哈。。。白老师只有劝告他们比赛必有输和赢。失败了，明年再来吧！

Why Phonic is importance to your child?

Phonics is one method of teaching children how to read. Children are taught how to "sound out" new words by learning the following items:

Consonant letters sounds: b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z
Blend sounds: br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr, wr, bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl, scr, str, sm, sn, sp, sc, sk,
Short vowel sounds: a, e, i, o, u
Always teach short vowel sounds first: a - apple, e - elephant, i- igloo, o - octopus, u - umbrella)
Digraph sounds: sh, ch, th, wh
Two letters combine to make a totally different sound.
Double vowel sounds: ai, ea, ee, oa
These pairs say the name of the first vowel.
Other double vowel sounds: oi, oo, ou, ow
Silent e: Silent e is bossy, it doesn't say anything but makes the vowel before it say its own name.
R controlled vowel sounds: ar, er, ir, or, ur
Notice that er,ir and ur make the same sound.

QQ Phonics is a series of rules that children have to memorize and apply when they are sounding out new words. Children are taught a rule, i.e. Silent e, and then they practice reading words with Silent e. Then children do skill sheets at their desk highlighting the Silent e rule. Children must learn letter sounds to an automatic level - they must be able to see the letter(s) and say the sound immediately.

本园在几年前开始实行阅读三字经，我们大家都知道，有些三字经里的字及意思都是我们都认为的外星文，（不懂的意思及阅读）但是里边带出的都是有意义的道德知识，那更别说小瓜们要如何的明白三字经深奥的意思了。只要现在小天使们时常阅读，在上了小学时，智商的程度慢慢的成熟后，自然而然的就会明白之前所阅读的三字经。所以必须要有耐心的等待。

QQ Sg Petani园内运动会即将引爆，今年的运动会将会在本月的29日举行，为了不干扰家长们做工的时间，本园今年度的运动会将不开放让家长们参与。希望家长们能体谅。

It's as simple as that. 小天使最佳学习管道就是从五个感官。。。嗅，摸，看，听，尝。就如书中所教的‘黄梨’，如果只是让小天使看和摸书中的黄梨，那很肯定的就跟实物教学有很大的差别了。书中的黄梨是滑的，而实物教学的是刺手和粗糙的。所以QQ的教学法大都是用实物教学以便小天使们能够从真正的实物中吸收知识。

In order to upgrade teacher knowledges and teaching quality, all the QQ's teachers have to attend concerned subject training frequently. Last Saturday, some of the teachers attended second semester practical sciences syllabus at Penang YMCA. although Bai lao shi under not feeling well situation, Bai lao shi and other branches principals also attended this training to gain more knowledges.

that our angels sit properly at the dinner table. The dinner table is a

wonderful place to train children to be polite, to sit still, and to listen as

others talk. Even the 2 years old angels in our school are required to sit

properly during a meal. I would say meal time has been a huge

opportunity to teach self-control to the children.

Many parents find it really challenging to cultivate their children's individuality. After all, it is only natural for them to feel that they should always be at their children's side, to provide their needs, to shield them from danger, and to nourish them both physically and emotionally.

But we give so much fuss when our children can perform tasks independently. Certainly, there is nothing wrong in wanting to express our love for them in practical ways. Unfortunately, it does not help when we 'smother' our children!

Let Them Do It! The ideal period to teach children responsibility and nurture independence is during their early years. Your children try to copy you as soon as they are born. Young children try out tasks reserved for adults, eagerly taking on new challenges.

To learn to be independent is to establish autonomy. Being independent makes children feel a very strong sense of self-esteem. Children are feeling good about themselves when they make their own choices. This means that pride in themselves is the greatest motivator.

昨天新的一个学期，白老师特地去班上向久而不见的小天使们打招呼，其中一个三岁的小天使。GUAN AN，一见到白老师就大声叫‘白老师。。。。。。’后跑过来深深地拥抱白老师。刚巧白老师昨天心血来潮就穿了件连身裙，短至膝盖上。这位小天使就说。。。。

冠安：白老师，今天你为什么穿裙？

白：是呀！白老师今天很想穿裙给冠安看呀！美不美？

冠安：美咯！白老师。。。。

白：谢谢你！冠安，那么就没有见到白老师，你有想白老师吗？

这位小天使还是紧抱着不放白老师说；我可想死你了。。。白老师。。。（哈哈哈）

白：哪。。。放假去哪里呀？

冠安：叔叔让我坐及驾CARI MAKAN呢！还有很大风呢！

白：哦！好不好玩？

冠安：好玩。。。。白老师，等我长大后，喔用CARI MAKAN载你去吃风ha....好不好？

当然！白老师一面大声的笑回答冠安。。好。。好。。好。。。但是白老师心里却想着，以后等冠安长大二十年后，那时候的白老师已经是六十岁的老婆婆了，不知冠安还要不要载白婆婆呢！哈哈哈！

Some of them look like steadily and some of them started cries when enter to the school compound. However, it's possible that the current situation could continue until next week.

In view of recent incident happened in a nursery in Penang where a toddler was found

drowned in a baby bathtub, we have taken several preventive measures as follows:-

1) No bathtub or pails are allowed in the toilet except bathing time which shall be

guarded by the teacher in-charge.

2) Direct pipe water method shall be used whenever is possible.

Second day for new student adaptation

Today is the second day for new student adaptation; he looks like comfortable and able to chat with other peers regarding his house story. And keep on telling to others parent will be come to fetch him shortly.

Children need sometimes to adapt new environment, some of them need long period and some of them only need short time frame. Parents do not over worry to them, just think positively because this is the process children have to go through.

Carlson 整天就对两岁的Jason说爸爸妈妈做工，等下就来了！其实自己在安慰自己呢！

June 2011 - QQ在六月份有四个新生报到，一个是两岁，两个三岁，另一个是四岁。通常新生所面对的都是情绪问题，因为一个孩子在不熟悉的环境难免会记得不安。这个时侯，家长们必须要有耐心及耐性的陪孩子经过此艰难的时刻。哭哭啼啼是难免的，通常新生都需要老师的陪伴在左右，让他觉得有了依靠，但是在过了一阵子当孩子适应了之后，就没问题了！
